High Cholesterol Treatment in Huntsville, AL

Cholesterol is not a number to be embarrassed about. It is one input into a risk calculation, and that calculation is what actually matters.

High cholesterol is managed at IM Clinic through lipid testing, an overall cardiovascular risk assessment, lifestyle change, and medication when your risk warrants it. The goal is not chasing one number in isolation but lowering your actual long-term risk of heart attack and stroke.

Testing and what the numbers mean

A lipid panel measures total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and triglycerides. LDL gets most of the attention because lowering it reliably reduces cardiovascular events. But an isolated number tells you little on its own. The same LDL means something very different in a 35-year-old with no other risk factors than in a 62-year-old with diabetes and high blood pressure.

Risk, not just numbers

We calculate your estimated cardiovascular risk using your age, blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes status, and smoking history. That estimate, not the cholesterol value alone, drives the treatment conversation. In borderline cases, additional testing such as a coronary calcium score can help clarify whether medication is worth it for you.

Lifestyle change

Dietary pattern, physical activity, weight, and alcohol all move lipids, and they move cardiovascular risk beyond what the lipid panel shows. These changes are genuinely effective and genuinely difficult, and we would rather help you make two changes that stick than hand you a list of ten you will abandon.

Medication

Statins are the best-studied medications in this space and reduce heart attacks and strokes in appropriately selected patients. Muscle aches are the most common complaint and are usually manageable by changing the dose or the specific drug. Other options exist when statins are not tolerated or not enough. We will talk through the real benefit in your case rather than treating a number reflexively.

When cholesterol runs in the family

Very high LDL, especially with a family history of early heart attacks, can point to familial hypercholesterolemia, an inherited condition that is underdiagnosed and that changes both treatment intensity and whether your relatives should be screened. If your pattern suggests it, we will say so.

Common questions

Do I have to fast before a lipid panel?

Often not. Non-fasting lipid panels are acceptable for most routine screening. If we need a fasting sample for a specific reason, we will tell you when we order it.

Will I be on a statin forever?

Usually it is a long-term medication, because the benefit comes from sustained lowering. That said, it is a decision we revisit as your risk profile and priorities change.

My cholesterol is high but I feel fine. Does it matter?

High cholesterol has no symptoms at all, which is precisely why it is treated. The point of treatment is preventing the event that does have symptoms.

What about supplements like red yeast rice or fish oil?

Bring them up and we will go through the evidence honestly. Some have modest effects, some interact with prescriptions, and quality varies widely between products.
