Just moved here
New to Huntsville? Start with a doctor.
Huntsville is one of the fastest-growing metros in the country. If you have just arrived, establishing primary care is one of those errands that is easy to postpone until the moment you actually need it.
To establish care in Huntsville, choose a primary care practice that accepts your insurance, register as a new patient, request your records from your previous clinic, and schedule a first visit. Doing this before you are sick means you have a care team that knows you when something goes wrong, plus access to same-day appointments as an established patient.
1. Check the network, not just the plan
If you moved for a job at Redstone Arsenal, a defense contractor, or one of the tech employers here, your insurance may have changed with it. Plan names travel; networks do not. Before you schedule anywhere, confirm the practice is in network for your specific plan. We are a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama preferred provider and accept Medicare and select Medicare Advantage plans, and if you are unsure about yours, call us and we will check it for you.
2. Request your records early
A new practice is far more useful with your history in hand: prior labs, imaging, immunizations, and the medication list as it actually stands. Ask your previous clinic for a records release, or ask us and we will send you one. Records can be faxed to (855) 736-3485. This one step is the difference between a first visit that starts from scratch and one that starts from where you left off.
3. Establish before you need it
The most common version of this story: someone puts off finding a doctor, gets sick eight months later, and ends up at an urgent care with a stranger who has none of their history. Established patients at IM Clinic can get same-day and next-day appointments. That access only exists if you are already a patient.
4. Bring the whole picture to the first visit
Insurance card, photo ID, every medication and supplement with doses, any records you have, and your questions written down. If you manage a chronic condition, bring recent numbers: home blood pressure readings, glucose logs, recent labs. First visits are longer here on purpose.
A note on choosing internal medicine
If you are an adult without children in the household, an internal medicine practice is worth considering over a family practice. Internists train exclusively in adult medicine, which is a meaningful difference once you are managing more than one condition at a time. If you need a practice that also sees your kids, a family medicine clinic is the better fit and we will happily say so.

Common questions
How do I transfer my medical records to a new doctor?
Ask your previous clinic for a records release form, or ask us for one. Records can be faxed to IM Clinic at (855) 736-3485. Start this before your first visit if you can. It makes that appointment far more useful.
Do I need a primary care doctor if I feel fine?
Yes. Establishing care while you are healthy means you have someone who knows your baseline when something changes, and it means you can get a same-day appointment as an established patient instead of sitting in an urgent care.
How long does it take to get established?
Register online and our office will call you to schedule, usually within one business day. Most new patients are seen within about a week.
Do you accept insurance from out-of-state employers?
Often yes. Many national plans have Alabama networks. Call us at (256) 715-9598 with your plan details and we will verify before you schedule.
