Diabetes Management in Huntsville, AL

Diabetes is managed in hundreds of small decisions between visits. Our job is to make those decisions easier and to catch drift early.

Diabetes management at IM Clinic means regular A1c monitoring, medication adjustment as your needs change, screening for the complications diabetes causes over time, and coordination with the specialists you may need. Our practice is physician-led and board-certified in internal medicine, where diabetes care is core training.

What ongoing diabetes care involves

Most patients with type 2 diabetes are seen every three to six months, depending on how well blood sugar is controlled and whether medications are changing. Visits typically include an A1c, a review of home glucose readings if you check them, a medication review, blood pressure, and a conversation about what has been realistic in your daily life since the last visit.

Screening for complications

Diabetes affects the eyes, kidneys, nerves, and cardiovascular system, and the damage is silent early on. We keep an annual schedule for kidney function testing, cholesterol, foot examination, and referral for dilated eye exams, because these are the checks that prevent problems rather than react to them.

Medication management

Diabetes medication has changed substantially in the last decade, and options that once required a specialist are now part of routine primary care. We discuss what fits your situation, including kidney function, heart history, cost, and how a medication fits your actual routine, because the best regimen is one you can sustain.

Prediabetes

If your labs show prediabetes, that is a meaningful window. Structured changes to diet and activity, and in some cases medication, can delay or prevent progression to type 2 diabetes. This is one of the highest-value conversations in primary care and it starts with knowing your numbers.

Common questions

How often will I need appointments?

Most patients with stable diabetes are seen every three to six months. If we are starting or adjusting medication, or if your A1c is not at goal, we will see you more often until things settle.

Do you manage type 1 diabetes?

We care for adults with type 1 diabetes and coordinate closely with endocrinology. Depending on the complexity of your regimen, specialist co-management may be the right approach, and we will tell you plainly if so.

Can diabetes visits be done by telemedicine?

Some can. Medication check-ins and reviewing home readings work well by video. Visits that need labs, a foot exam, or vitals need to be in the office.

Does Medicare cover diabetes care?

Yes. Medicare covers diabetes management, A1c testing, and related screenings.
